Ray, thank you for your thoughtful comment, and corrections! We've been so excited to get close to the park we anticipated...and didn't give enough appreciation to the stunning coastal range itself! While our trip north has not given us as much time to explore the SE as we are against a deadline to get to the Arctic, we plan our trip south to give us much more time to explore the incredible treasure of the Tongass! It is hard to have had to go straight through this time with all there is to see.

Hi Shannon & Peter,

You had me confused about Wrangell-St Elias National Park when you spoke about visiting Wrangell in SE Alaska. The Park is 400 miles northwest of Wrangell and outside of Southeast Alaska. The next town on the ferry route is Petersburg, not Saint Petersburg, and, yes, Wrangell Narrows is a treat to navigate through, especially in the dark!

I hope you took some time off while in Ketchikan or Juneau to hike some of the local trails into the Tongass or visit the Southeast Discovery Center in Ketchikan or the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor's Center in Juneau (its the first visitor's center the Forest Service ever builtin in the whole U.S.)
