In medieval times, the Ultima Thule was used as a moniker for those lands outside of the known world. Despite the heated debates on development, many of Alaska’s lands remain essentially unknown, even to the residents of the state itself.

In the summer of 2009, Peter and Shannon Huffman Polson will embark on journeys through the northernmost public lands of America. We will visit the Eastern Arctic, the Western Arctic, Gates of the Arctic National Park, The Lake Clark National Park and Pebble Mine areas, Wrangell St. Elias National Park, Denali National Park, the Chugach, and the Tongass National Forest. As these areas come up more and more in national news, and come up for vote, we think you should have a chance to know these special places before making decisions on them!

We have partnered with two environmental education groups for curricula development: Facing the Future and Kids for Saving Earth, as well as the National Parks Conservation Association. Our sponsors are global Rescue, nuun and Eat Local.

But the Ultima Thule is not only about this summer. It is not only about two adventurers and Arctic lovers. It is about all of the stories, thoughts, experiences and musings on the Arctic. Have you visited these wild places? Do you have a story to share, something that can help make the Arctic come alive in words or pictures? Jump on board, and help the Ultima Thule bring these special places to the rest of our world! We believe our nation and our world need to know what special places we have in our Arctic. We believe they ned to know the stories, the people, the experiences and the wilderness before they vote. Will you help us share the Arctic?

We are currently seeking additional sponsors, and are always open to additional partners.

Our site is live as of Earth Day, April 22, 2009. We will be developing it a great deal over the next couple of weeks- stay posted! And thank you for joining us on our journey! Tell your friends- all are welcome!
